Bundling with Farmers vs. buying from two different companies

The following table shows the cost of buying separate policies with Farmers and another carrier for home or auto insurance and whether you’ll save if you bundle.

“Some companies may have lower auto rates and higher home rates so that the bundle discount doesn’t actually save money. That’s where an agent comes in handy.  If they know the market they can help save money by shopping it to multiple carriers,” says Jake Jones, owner of North Wyoming Insurance, an independent agency.

Bundling with Farmers generally gets you discounted rates. There are a few scenarios where buying separate policies is cheaper, however — if you buy an auto policy from Farmers and a separate home policy with either Allstate, Erie, Progressive, or State Farm, doing so will actually cost less.

Methodology

Insure.com commissioned home and auto insurance rates for major carriers from Quadrant Data Services in late 2023. Home insurance rates are based on $300,000 in dwelling and liability coverage and a $1,000 deductible. Auto insurance rates are based on a full coverage policy with 100/300/100 liability limits and $500 deductibles, using the sample profile of a 40-year-old male driving a 2023 Honda Accord LX with a clean driving record and good credit. Quadrant also provided average bundling discounts.
