Company background

Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield traces its roots back to 1917 in Tacoma, Washington. It began as the Pierce County Industrial Medical and Surgical Service Bureau, started by a group of timber workers who decided to pool part of their wages to cover one another’s medical bills. What began as a small act of community support eventually grew into the health insurance organization known today as Regence.

Is Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield right for you?

Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield offers a good variety of health insurance plans, including individual and family plans, group plans, Marketplace plans, Medicare plans, Medicare Advantage plans, vision plans and dental plans. The plan types available depend on your location.

Overall, Regence has great third-party ratings, with few complaints and good customer satisfaction scores. Regence Insurance Companies (Washington, Oregon and Utah) receive an A rating for financial strength from AM Best, which means it has an excellent ability to meet policyholder obligations and pay claims. Regence BlueShield of Idaho has an A- rating, which is also considered excellent.

However, one of the downsides of Regence is that the customer experience, plan types and prices can vary depending on the Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee that underwrites your policy.
