Allstate is No. 7 among national carriers in Insure.com’s Best car insurance companies of 2024 with 3.78 stars out of 5.
Allstate’s average premiums are higher than many competitors – a company’s rates can bring down its star ranking as price is a major part of the score. Of the companies on our list, only one, CSAA, has a higher monthly premium. Allstate, however, was the No. 1 ranked company for claims service in Insure.com’s survey of insurance consumers and did well in several other categories.
Below is Insure.com’s review of the company. It’s based on third-party metrics and an in-depth survey of insurance customers. Find the full methodology here, including an explanation of our survey scores.

Allstate was the second-most expensive auto insurer in our 2024 Insure.com ranking with an average monthly premium of $209. CSAA Insurance Group was the only company with higher rates at $217 per month. The table below shows how much auto insurance from Allstate compares with the monthly rates from some of its competitors.
Three-quarters of Allstate customers reported satisfaction with the company’s customer service, which is about average among the companies in our survey. However, Erie (90%), which led the category, American Family (89%) and State Farm (84%) scored better for customer satisfaction.
More than 80% of Allstate rated it highly for ease of service, which considers the ease of accessing policy documents and services. Most companies had scores in the 70th and 80th percentiles. Erie had the highest score among ranked companies in this category, with 90% of its customers giving it high marks.
For policy offerings, 80% of Allstate respondents said they were satisfied with the company in our survey. The company’s policy offerings include classic car insurance, standard auto insurance coverages and umbrella insurance. Allstate had a good rating in this category, which Erie won at 88%.
In our survey, 88% of Allstate customers said they’d recommend the company to others. Some competitors had higher scores, including State Farm. Erie was the leader in this category with 100% of its customers saying they’d tell others about it.
Seventy-five percent of Allstate’s customers gave it high marks for trustworthiness – most insurers earned scores in the 70th and 80th percentile. The top scorer was Erie at 86%
Nearly 90% of Allstate customers said they’ll renew their policies, but it wasn’t the highest score. All Erie customers who responded to our survey said they plan to renew.
Allstate was the No. 1 company in our ranking for claims handling, with 86% of customers saying they were satisfied or highly satisfied with how their claim was handled. State Farm was a close second at 85%.
For the Allstate digital experience – which includes its website and app – 57% of Allstate respondents gave it a high score. Allstate was one of the top companies for digital experience behind Geico (64%) and Progressive and CSAA Insurance Group (60%).
Sixty-one percent of Allstate customers gave it high grades for discounts, Auto Club of Southern California was the top-scoring company at 70%, and most insurers scored in the 60th percentile.
Allstate scored in the upper half among its competitors for bundling home and auto policies, a category topped by Erie (69%), American Family (66%), Travelers (62%) and State Farm (61%).
Allstate protects about 16 million households with insurance products, including auto, life, renters, condo and property insurance. Allstate has more than 12,000 exclusive agencies and financial representatives across the U.S. and Canada, making it highly accessible for anyone who prefers to deal with an agent in person. It also offers identity protection to help customers monitor their credit, data and identity.
In addition, the company launched the Allstate Foundation in 1952 to advance racial equality and build non-profit leaders through its Nonprofit Leadership Center. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it offered Shelter-in Place Payback, which put nearly $1 billion back in the pockets of auto insurance customers.

Insure.com in the fall of 2023 surveyed more than 1,750 insurance consumers (1,459 people with auto insurance). Online market research company Slice MR conducted the survey. Respondents were asked to name their auto insurer and then grade it in the following categories – customer satisfaction, ease of service and policy offerings. The percentage of respondents who said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their insurer is presented in the results.
Respondents were then asked to pick their insurer’s top three attributes out of more than a dozen presented – trustworthiness, claims satisfaction, digital experience, discounts and best for auto/home bundling. The responses for each attribute were totaled and then divided by the number of each company’s customers who responded to that survey question to create a percentage.
Respondents were then asked if they would recommend their auto insurer to someone else and whether they would renew with their company. The percentage who said yes is presented in the results.
Finally, respondents were given the statement “I trust my insurance company” and asked if they strongly agreed, agreed, disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement. The percentage of those who said they agreed or strongly agreed is presented in the results.
The editors compiled the survey results and then selected – based on the number of survey responses – the top companies for further evaluation.
They then collected AM Best data, which measures financial strength, and National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint data, which ranks a company by the number of customer complaints it receives. The Insure.com team identified the NAIC company code or codes that were the primary underwriting companies for each carrier and line of business using total annual premiums. The associated NAIC complaint index score was used in the calculations. If more than one underwriting company was identified for a line, the editors used a weighted average of the NAIC complaint index scores.
In addition, we also created star rankings for each company. Respondents were asked to pick their insurer’s top three attributes out of the more than the dozen presented, again including customer satisfaction and policy offerings. The number of responses for each attribute was totaled and then divided by the number of each company’s customers who responded to that survey question to create the star ranking.
The editors also collected insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services.
With the help of Prof. David Marlett, Ph.D., Managing Director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University, the editors created a rating system to determine which insurance companies were best in each sector. For auto insurers, we took the following and gave each a weight.
Each insurer was awarded from half a star to 5 stars. No insurer in our star ranking received less than half a star and 5 stars was the most any insurer could receive.
